Are handmade soaps better than store bought? I’m going to answer that with 3 reasons why you should switch to handmade soaps today! But first, I want share with you how I started using handmade, natural bath products. I was introduced to handmade soaps and bath products through Mermaid Bodyworks.

Reason 1 – Handmade Soaps Moisturize not Dry Out your Skin
The best handmade soaps are made with natural oils such as coconut oil, shea butter and/or olive oils. These moisturizing ingredients will soften your skin and draw moisture to it. Unlike commercially-produced (store bought) soaps that use detergents and chemicals that will dry out your skin.
Moisturizing ingredients to look for in your handmade soaps
Shea Butter
Shea butter is naturally rich in Vitamins A and E as well as essential fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals. The fatty acids in this butter are known to penetrate the skin and deliver nutrients and antioxidants deep into the skin. This keeps it hydrated and healthy. It is also known for its anti inflammatory properties and provides a low level SPF (6)
Coconut, Olive and Castor Oils
Coconut oil is a great oil for general moisturizing. This oil serves as a protective layer, helping to retain the moisture in your skin. Known for its anti-bacterial properties it is high in fatty acids. This makes it beneficial for skin as an anti inflammatory, anti-aging and also low SPF.
Olive oil stimulates new cell generation, slows down wrinkle development and gives skin a youthful look. Soaps made with olive oil provide anti-inflammatory effects to help heal skin abrasions, rashes and even sunburns. Additionally, olive oil soap is known to provide relief to skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Castor oil creates amazing lather in handmade cold process soap. It also helps draw moisture to the skin so it stays smooth
Reason 2 – Handmade Soaps are made with Safe Ingredients
So this next part is kind of scary to hear. The big soap and skin care manufacturers have a dirty secret. The FDA doesn’t require disclosure of the ingredients contained in a company’s trademark “fragrance” on its label. This means that scented soap could contain harmful chemicals without the buyer knowing. Some of these chemical concoctions have been found to be skin irritants and even to contain known carcinogens.
Besides fragrance, large manufactures tend to use a whole list of chemicals. Some of these ingredients may cause or lead to future health issues. Synthetic preservatives such as Parabens, Sodium lauryl sulfate and Triclosan are just a few. Some of these can be potential endocrine and hormone disruptors in humans. These chemicals can also have negative impacts on environmental health and our aquatic systems.
So what is the take away on this? I think knowing exactly what is in my bath and body products is a start. Finding soaps and body products made with vegan oils and fragranced with essential oils is really important to me.
Reason 3 – Handmade Soaps & Bath Products Smell Amazing
Some handmade soaps and body products can have the rich scent of the natural oils they are made from. The nuttiness of the Shea butter or the earthy tones of olive oil. Other handmade products are made with pure essential oils that not only smell amazing but also have other healing properties.
Not only do you receive wonderful aromatherapy benefits from essential oils, but you’ll smell amazing all day. To make your handmade soaps last longer, keep your soap in a dish that drains. Also avoid letting them sit in the stream of water. This will prevent the soap from softening and melting away.
Conclusion
Handmade soaps and body products are moisturizing, safe for your skin and smell amazing. If you are ready to switch to handmade soaps then I highly recommend Mermaid Bodyworks .
